Special Secret Spice Mix

A delicious tasty gluten-free spice and seasoning mix that you can add to any number of dishes. I guess it's not a secret anymore!

Years ago we received a special gift of a spice mix in a jar and a pestle and mortar. It was such a delicious and versatile combination that when it ran out I tried to emulate it. Nowadays we have perfected the mix and use it liberally in many dishes, using a spice mill. You can easily tweak the quantities according to taste. I usually make up a large quantity at a time and store it in jar, but I have given ratios as well if you prefer to make a smaller mix.

Gluten-Free Special Secret Spice Mix

A yummy and versatile blend of spices

  • 2 parts dried red peppercorns
  • 1 part dried mustard seeds
  • 1 part dried fennel seeds
  • 1 part dried chili flakes
  • 1 part dried garlic granules

 To make a large batch:

  • 75g rock/sea salt
  • 50g dried black peppercorns
  • 50g dried red peppercorns
  • 25g dried black mustard seeds
  • 25g dried fennel seeds
  • 25g dried chili flakes
  • 25g dried garlic granules

  • To make, simply weigh all the ingredients and stir well to mix.
  • Store in an airtight container.
  • To use, grind in a spice mill or pestle and mortar.

I find it great having a spice mill in the kitchen. Last year I was given a special set which had three base pots and one mill top. This means I can vary the ingredients in the mix and always have a spice mix on hand that will suit the meal. That said, I generally use this one because it tastes so nice!
